CHAPTER SIX
JULIET gasped. ‘What on earth are you doing here?’
‘Waiting for you,’ he revealed grimly. There was a dark growth of beard on his chin, his hair dishevelled, his clothes creased.
‘But I—How did you get in?’ she frowned, surer than ever that she had locked the door.
‘I picked the lock,’ he told her calmly.
‘You picked—You broke in!’ she accused heatedly, putting her bag down on the table.
‘That’s one way of putting it.’ His mouth twisted.
‘It’s the way I would put it. How long have you been here?’ she demanded to know, hardly able to believe the gall of this man. He had actually forced the lock to get into her flat!
Jake shrugged. ‘Where have you been?’ His eyes were narrowed.
‘Out!’
‘Where?’
‘I don’t have to tell you—You’re hurting me!’ she groaned as he came forward to twist her arm up behind her back, bringing his body close against her as he glared down at her.
‘I’d like to do more than hurt you,’ he ground out. ‘I called you at ten o’clock, and when I received no answer I kept calling every half hour until one o’clock. Then I got worried,’ he revealed harshly. ‘All sorts of ideas ran through my mind, like maybe you were hurt and couldn’t get to the phone to call for help. I even picked the lock because I thought that. And all the time you’ve been with some other man! Who have you been with, Juliet?’
‘I—’
He increased the pressure on her arm. ‘Who?’ he demanded grimly.
‘Michael,’ she groaned. ‘We—’
‘Michael Dickson?’ he said disbelievingly.
‘Yes. But—
Jake thrust her away from him. ‘You’ve been with your best friend’s husband?’ he rasped.
‘Yes. You see—’
‘I don’t want to know!’ He looked down at her contemptuously. ‘That’s the most disgusting thing I ever heard!’
‘Jake—’
‘Excuse me. I have to leave before I throw up!’
‘Jake, listen to me!’
He spun round. ‘I’m through listening to you,’ he said savagely. ‘It’s bad enough that he’s married, but to your best friend, a pregnant friend at that. You sicken me, you and Dickson both!’ He slammed out of the flat, uncaring that it was almost four o’clock in the morning.
Juliet sank down weakly into the nearest chair, unable to take in what had just happened. Jake had to be the most savage person she had ever met—and she had the strangest feeling she was going to miss him.
She waited all the next day for him to telephone, if not to apologise then to at least ask her what had really happened. No call came from him. And she was too proud to ask Michael for Jake’s number, even though she knew he must have it. Besides, she hadn’t been the one in the wrong. How could Jake have possibly believed such things about her and Michael!
Melanie was in much better spirits. Tests showed that the fall had caused no permanent harm.
‘I feel so silly now,’ she told Juliet ruefully, propped up into a sitting position by three or four pillows.
‘You shouldn’t,’ Juliet assured her. ‘It’s better to check with these things.
